Camels Corner
Sunday 23rd October
This was a day which the Camels were anxiously looking forward to. The Burleigh Sports Club Fishing Club had requested to join us in a pleasant Sunday morning’s competition. This was organized by several of our Camel’s members who are also members of the Fishos. So the morning eventuated with players from the Fishos joining the Camels members who were also members of the Fishos in what was a great morning’s bowls. With all Fishos combining to take on the Camels we ended up with 4 rinks of triples plus some who doubled up so we all had a game. At approx. 10.30 a table miraculously appeared adjacent to the small green together with 10kgs of juicy prawns that were provided by the Fishos. We later continued with bowls until12 midday when we adjourned inside.
The overall scores were the Fishos 37 and the Camels 54 thus the trophy presented by the Fishos was awarded to the Camels. The trophy is to be contested on an annual basis. Winning rinks with prizes of three $ 25 vouchers to the dining room of the Burleigh Sports Club were won by
Russell Newton, Rowdy and Stephan Mullawa,- Denny Edwards, Herbie and Wally, – Pete Harris, Strawb and Roy the Boy,- Losing rink prize went to Rabbit, Brent Issott and Jakob Wissman,-With the Camels prize going to Fishos of Dave and Brett Clarence with Mick Turner. Dave and Mick are also Camel members.
The Sports Club and the Fishos provided prizes that were donated for a big raffle with the proceeds divided between the Camels and the Fisho’s. The first prize in the raffle was won with Mick Boland scoring an 8 man tent. Mick’s first use of this tent on a camping weekend should be some sight. It was even suggested that we could save on accommodation costs at Evans Head by using it. Other prizes went to Harry Gaylard, Bob Graham, Wally from the Bombers, Dave Clarence, Eddie Ashford and a lady customer in the dining room.
Club Board Chairman John Fowler drew the winner of the club raffle of the personally signed football jersey won by Brian Raw a club bowler.
A great day was had by all with four new Club Members from the Fishos signing up as Club members and also indicating that they will be playing with the Camels. Thus one part of the benefits to the main club from the Camels is new members.
Sunday 30th October
The much awaited Annual Evans Head “Raw Prawns” visit to the Camels saw 30 Camels rock up against 19 visitors. The weather was extremely good to us with a pleasant morning being had by all. Games were all played in good humour with the Camels, having never beaten the Prawns winning five of the six rinks with Wally’s rink going down by one point. Camels eventual winners by 44 points. Winning rink for the Camels was Mick Turner, Cowboy McNamarra and the Pope. The prawns rink winners was the rink skipped by Bill Cooper. Prior to lunch being served the appropriate thanks were given and the raffle drawn with winners being Wally Kitching and Pat Carmody with a club visitor claiming 3rd prize. After lunch the “Raw Prawns” withdrew stumps and joined their bus home to daylight saving territory.
Sunday 6th November
The second Annual “ Monster” Jack Mawson Memorial Trophy Day was played in fine weather with 22 Camels turning up in memory of Jack. The trophy was won on the highest margin by Wayne Thompson and George Harrison The raffle was won by Harry Gaylard, Tom Boland with the three consolation prizes going to Boz, a club visitor and George Harrison. A debriefing was held with hot chips supplementing the refreshments.
Sunday 13th November
This day was specifically a fund raising day for the Burleigh Surf Club and their Miss Surfgirl entrant. 24 Camels managed to play various people as well as instructing new players. A great morning was had by all and a profitable one for the Surf Club
Sunday 20th November,
Due to the absence of myself in the “house sick”, Strawb down south and other key players away it was decided that just a friendly roll up take place and I am informed that this was the case.
Have a very merry Christmas and a great New Year, from the Camels.
Tips for Cruise Ships
Having recently completed a cruise here are some musts. Take along cold and flu tablets, motion sickness pills and any other medications you think you need. Shipboard Medical assistance is very expensive, ensure you have adequate travel insurance. Organised tours are expensive compared to researching your own on the internet. As soon as you have a booking number, access the cruise ship via the internet and discover all about it cash requirements etc. Ensure you get plenty of fresh air whilst on board for extended periods. Two thousand people enclosed in an air conditioned ship equals colds and flu. Be wary of what you eat it catches up on you. See as much of the entertainment as possible and above all ENJOY!!!!
Coaching Notes
This month I would like to revisit a subject which I thought I had covered some time ago, I refer to the etiquette of players on the green. Those simple things which you can, and should, do to make the game more enjoyable for your rink and adjoining rinks.
- Know your opponents bowl and hand it to him/her if convenient.
- Drop your mat on the green where you wish to bowl from.
- Share the task of kicking bowls back 2m behind the mat.
- Avoid distracting players while they are on the mat preparing to bowl.
- Avoid encroaching on an adjoining rink.
- Walk to the head as near as possible to the centre line of the rink.
- Refrain from interfering with the head till the last bowl is delivered and the head has been declared.
- Shake hands with your opponents and your team members before the start and at the end of the game.
- Morning leads, take your mats and jack to the starting side of the afternoon game on your green and rink number. Afternoon leads, return your mats and jack to the mat box at the end of the game
- Dress as per the dress code displayed in the locker room.
- Club house etiquette – After the game the winners should offer to buy the first round of the refreshments and in singles the invitation should be extended to the marker. Losers should reciprocate and avoid making excuses for losing.
Please act with courtesy to everyone at all times. Learn the rules, rule books are available from the secretary at minimal cost. Always look and act like a bowler, even if you don’t think you are. Make sure you and everyone around you enjoys their game.
Good bowling and enjoy.
