Greens Gossip February 2012 – Ed. 204
In Brief
Sunday 11th December
A sit down Christmas lunch was prepared and served by the great staff of Salt and Peppers. Consisting of an entrée of Oysters Kilpatrick, Mornay and Natural with beautiful prawns followed by a roast lunch of many meats and veggies. Leesa and her staff are to be congratulated for their magnificent presentation.
There was a scratch game on Sunday 18th December with no play on Christmas Day or New Years Day.
Sunday 8th January
A day which was definitely not cool greeted 19 Camels for the first day of our 2012 calendar. After appropriate New Years greetings were exchanged we proceeded to the number one green for our mornings play. To say the green was not slow would have to be the understatement of 2012 and it proved to be a steep learning curve for two guys who have just joined us. We welcome Terry and “Rabbit” from the Burleigh Sports Club Fisho’s and trust that they will enjoy our style of recreation.
Our raffle was won by none other than “Rabbit” with the consolation prizes going to visitors to the club. The winning rink was Bob Graham, Pat Carmody and Russell Newton who received stubbie coolers and a cloth. Our two new members have joined the main club and could be a danger to established bowlers in future.
Sunday 15th January
It is with great regret that we were informed of the death of Dave Clarence. Dave had only been a member of the Camels and Burleigh Bowls Club for two years. He was one of our recruits from the Burleigh Sports club Fishing Group and being a quick learner he was able to pick up the intricacies of bowls and became a very good player for the Camels. We extend our sympathies to his family and large number of friends both in the Camels and the Fisho’s Club.
This Sunday saw 21 Camels travel to Tugun to begin combat with the “2 Guns – Pottsville Pirates and Sth Tweed Trippers”. The day did not show that the weather would be kind to us however the rain held off and we all managed to have a pleasant Sunday Morning’s bowls. The Camels showed a lack of competitive practice in our games and only managed one win and a draw out of seven rinks of triples.
Winners of the trophy presented by the Tugun 2 Guns were Harry Carmody, Strawb Thompson and Pete Harris ably skipped by Wally Kitching. It would be remiss of me not to point out that the game was won on the last end with two beautifully drawn bowls to the Jack by none other than myself. The raffle was drawn with Pat Carmody being amongst the winners and “Yogi” Thompson winning two prizes. We journeyed home after a delightful BBQ lunch.
Coaching Notes
I hope you all had a very pleasant Christmas and are now ready to knuckle down to some hard training for self improvement. The most important point in bowls is to have a smooth, completely repeatable delivery. So let us examine the points of the delivery which will ensure you are as smooth as your body will allow you to be. Firstly, your grip must be comfortable and sure, the bowl should be held in the finger tips to allow you to have a good feel for its weight, but must not feel that it is going to fall out of your hand. The preferred grip by most coaches and probably the majority of players, is the orthodox index and little fingers on the rings beside the running surface, with the thumb on, or just below, the ring. Just below the ring does remove pressure from the major joint of the thumb and is preferred by many players and coaches. Secondly, your stance on the mat should be such that you can stand with your body facing along the aiming line repeatedly. This is necessary because if the mat is moved up or back on the rink you don’t have a fixed aiming line other than the one dictated by your angle to the centre line from your feet. If you wish to prove this place the mat, on the T and a jack on the other T. Draw a bowl to the anchor foot position on the mat, move the mat up to the 21m mark, place your foot in precisely the same place and deliver to the jack. You will find jack, make a strong mental note of your anchor foot place and deliver to the jack.
You will find that, without reference to any other mark, you will draw the shot. Thirdly, be completely balanced on the mat, if you are not as you start your backswing, stop, stand and restart your delivery swing. As you take the step forward, again if you don’t feel balanced, stop, stand, and start again. Fourthly, as you are swinging your arm into your backswing, make sure you lock your elbow and wrist at about the vertical and complete your back swing with a rigid arm and your delivery swing with the same rigidity of arm. Hold this position in the follow through, watch your bowl travel roughly a third of the way up the green before you come up going forward. Fifthly as you step forward make sure you are stepping straight ahead without bringing the toe of your stepping foot across your line as this will twist your body off your aiming line and produce a narrow backhand or a wide forehand delivery. Above all practice with an aim in mind, you may be having trouble with a particular shot, practice this shot repeatedly till you are comfortable playing it, but still practice the shots you play well. If you need help deciding on a training regime, talk to a coach who can help you develop the program which will suit your needs. I hope you have a very healthy and satisfying year in 2012 and above all enjoy your life and your bowls.
Have fun and enjoy.

defeated
A. Panther, L. Jackson, David Cooke,B. Kelly (sk) 10
O’Toole’s team won the Ends 14 to 6 and got 7 multiple Ends so were always going to be hard to beat. A very good win.
Quarter Final
B. Archer, G. Blackburn, L. Landon, C. Vella (sk) 22
defeated
M. Foley, V. Sullivan, P. Street, G. Woods (sk) 21
A lot of tension in this game. Everyone knows the rules so you don’t need an Umpire, particularly when one member bowls two bowls in a row. Vella lost the Ends 10 to 11 but got 7 multiple Ends to 4 by Woods team. An amazing finish - Vella got 5 shots in End 20 and with a big drive by Wood’s his team replied with 5 shots but fell short by just 1 bowl. A very exciting game.
Semi Finals
K. Murphy, B. McGregor, M. Myers, S. O’Toole (sk) 20
defeated
B. Archer, G. Blackburn, L. Landon, C. Vella (sk) 13
This was a fantastic game. The score was 14 to 13 in favour of O’Toole’s team with one End to play. Would you believe it, O,Toole’s team got 6 shots so it was all over on the 20th End. What a good game.
C. Hilton, D. Lavis, J. Heapy, G. Pearson (sk) 22
defeated
P. Ormes, P. Hamilton, B. McKenzie, A. Stark (sk) 16
Another top game. 16 all with 3 Ends to play, and BINGO Pearson’s team won the last 3 Ends to win by 6 shots. A top performance.
Final
C. Hilton, D. Lavis, J. Heapy, G. Pearson (sk) 21
defeated
K. Murphy, B. McGregor, M. Myers, S. O’Toole (sk) 20
A great game. Pearson won the Ends 11 to 10 and they also won the multiple Ends 7 to 5. Pearson’s team had a good 13 to 5 head on End 11 which O’Toole’s team changed around by getting 13 shots in the next 5 Ends. Then O’Toole’s team had a handy 4 shot head with two Ends to play. Unfortunately he didn’t capitalize on the last End electing to draw instead of play an on shot with plenty of bowls to catch the Kitty at the rear.
Ladies Presidents Report
As this is the first Greens Gossip for the year, I would like to thank you for your support for my Presidential year.
Although it is a couple of months since we had our Christmas party, I’d like to congratulate Providor Margaret and her helpers (you know who you are), for the beautiful day they arranged and managed on Thursday 8th December. I am sure everyone enjoyed the day, so thank you for a job well done.
We celebrated the first of many events for the Club’s 75th Anniversary on Saturday 14th January. My goodness, how the face of bowls has changed over the years. Particularly in the Ladies Section, as was evidenced by the ‘Back to the Past’ attire worn…. No measuring sticks!, white stockings etc! and ‘horror of horrors’ lady bowlers in shorts!…………
The mind boggles in trying to imagine the changes that will no doubt occur in future years.
This anniversary is testimony to the astute management and the spirit of our members, both past and present.
I trust we will all participate in and enjoy the many activities that have been planned for the year.
Finally, I again wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year.
Keep smiling and good bowling.
