Greens Gossip February 2012 – Ed. 204

In Brief

On Saturday the 14th of January our 75th Anniversary celebrations commenced with a great day. The attendance was exceptional and all who made the decision to join in their Clubs actives will remember the day. It again highlighted the many friendships we have formed with our fellow members and within the Burleigh community. To everyone who contributed to make the day a success I say ‘Thank you’. We have a great Club with many members prepared to assist us with social events and bowling activities.

First quarter financial report show a small net increase of $9000 compared to 2010. As the treasurer stated at the AGM in November, a profit similar to 2011 would be acceptable.

To maintain an acceptable level of profit from Bar trading we have found it necessary to make adjustments to our pricing. In doing this it must be remembered the wholesale price of alcohol increases twice per year together with freight costs. This combined with the general increases associated with the Bar makes it impossible to record a satisfactory margin without price adjustments.

The Clubs new rewards system is now in place as previously explained it is designed to reward the members who are frequent visitors to the Club. After many years of listening to the weekly members draw and with only a slight chance of receiving a return, we feel after investigating other Clubs activities this will reward those who utilize the Club. Please be patient with the new system as we will be making improvements to the programme during the year as required.

Social memberships are being accepted at an average of 90 people per month and when one looks at the addresses, 85% of members live within a 10km radius.

One of our very good sponsors Ray White Burleigh Heads will present the Club with a cheque for $2000. This was a commitment Scott Boniwell made in offering the Club $1,000 for any sale involving a member. This is an ongoing commitment to our Club so remember Ray White if you are thinking of any real-estate decisions.

We have a new sponsor in the form of “MIDAS” Burleigh Heads. David Anderson franchisee will be offering members discounts on a wide range of services and these will be shown on the T.V monitors and in the Greens Gossip etc. Give David a call and he will be happy to assist you, (07) 55 082 811.

Gaming

It would now appear the mandatory pre commitment for poker machines has been deferred. In recent weeks the Federal Government have altered their stance on this issue and from all reports it would appear a final decision on the controversial subject will not be made in the near future.

John Fowler

Chairman

Camels Corner

Due to AGM’s we were unable to play on 27th November and 4th December. The Camels wish to congratulate all successful nominees for positions in both the Board and Men’s Club and assure co-operation from the Camels.

Sunday 11th December

This was the day of the Camel’s AGM in which we saw none of the committee positions requiring ballots. The successful nominees were as follows.

President Alan Smith

Past President Stefan Mullawa

Secretary Pete Harris

Treasurer Mick Boland

Ass. Treasurer Herbie Carmody

Games Director Wayne (Strawb) Thompson

Raffle Convener Pat Carmody

This day was also the annual Camel’s Christmas Function and was attended by approximately 50 members and invited guests with friendly games of bowls being played at 9:30am immediately after the AGM. The Camels all looked resplendent in their new shirts which were handed out on the day. Costs of the shirts were kept to a minimum with wonderful sponsorship by Heritage Funerals, Burleigh Sports Club, Lacy West Real Estate at Burleigh, Travel Scene Burleigh, Salt and Peppers Bistro and Keith Bosley who also provided bowls cloths to all Camels. Trophies were presented with Pat Carmody getting the attendance award with a total of 34 games with the Camels on Sundays. The encouragement award was won by Eddie Ashford for his eagerness and attitude to bowls. We were fortunate to see Eddie perform something which could be described as a mixture of a Hakka and Michael Jackson’s moon walk. The Bassett award for the biggest blooper of the year went to Pat Carmody for his effort at the Bribre Island, Bongaree bowls Club during our weekend visit to their club. It appears that Pat was a spectator at the Bongaree Club on the Saturday and watching the Club Singles Final. This match was between the existing Club Champion and his challenger. As can happen to anyone the Champ had a shocker of a game being soundly defeated. Next morning we played a social match against the Bongaree Pirates with Pat being chosen as a skip at his request. The pirate’s team that Pat’s team was drawn to play was skipped by none other than the looser of the previous day’s singles match. In a rash moment Pat loudly declared that the opposition was a team of easy beats based on the singles final. Needless to say this statement came back to burn and Pat’s team was defeated 57 to 2 which we believe is a record margin. A monster raffle was drawn with prizes made available by the Camels and donations with special thanks to John Fowler.

A sit down Christmas lunch was prepared and served by the great staff of Salt and Peppers. Consisting of an entrée of Oysters Kilpatrick, Mornay and Natural with beautiful prawns followed by a roast lunch of many meats and veggies. Leesa and her staff are to be congratulated for their magnificent presentation.

There was a scratch game on Sunday 18th December with no play on Christmas Day or New Years Day.

Sunday 8th January

A day which was definitely not cool greeted 19 Camels for the first day of our 2012 calendar. After appropriate New Years greetings were exchanged we proceeded to the number one green for our mornings play. To say the green was not slow would have to be the understatement of 2012 and it proved to be a steep learning curve for two guys who have just joined us. We welcome Terry and “Rabbit” from the Burleigh Sports Club Fisho’s and trust that they will enjoy our style of recreation.

Our raffle was won by none other than “Rabbit” with the consolation prizes going to visitors to the club. The winning rink was Bob Graham, Pat Carmody and Russell Newton who received stubbie coolers and a cloth. Our two new members have joined the main club and could be a danger to established bowlers in future.

Sunday 15th January

It is with great regret that we were informed of the death of Dave Clarence. Dave had only been a member of the Camels and Burleigh Bowls Club for two years. He was one of our recruits from the Burleigh Sports club Fishing Group and being a quick learner he was able to pick up the intricacies of bowls and became a very good player for the Camels. We extend our sympathies to his family and large number of friends both in the Camels and the Fisho’s Club.

This Sunday saw 21 Camels travel to Tugun to begin combat with the “2 Guns – Pottsville Pirates and Sth Tweed Trippers”. The day did not show that the weather would be kind to us however the rain held off and we all managed to have a pleasant Sunday Morning’s bowls. The Camels showed a lack of competitive practice in our games and only managed one win and a draw out of seven rinks of triples.

Winners of the trophy presented by the Tugun 2 Guns were Harry Carmody, Strawb Thompson and Pete Harris ably skipped by Wally Kitching. It would be remiss of me not to point out that the game was won on the last end with two beautifully drawn bowls to the Jack by none other than myself. The raffle was drawn with Pat Carmody being amongst the winners and “Yogi” Thompson winning two prizes. We journeyed home after a delightful BBQ lunch.

Coaching Notes

I hope you all had a very pleasant Christmas and are now ready to knuckle down to some hard training for self improvement. The most important point in bowls is to have a smooth, completely repeatable delivery. So let us examine the points of the delivery which will ensure you are as smooth as your body will allow you to be. Firstly, your grip must be comfortable and sure, the bowl should be held in the finger tips to allow you to have a good feel for its weight, but must not feel that it is going to fall out of your hand. The preferred grip by most coaches and probably the majority of players, is the orthodox index and little fingers on the rings beside the running surface, with the thumb on, or just below, the ring. Just below the ring does remove pressure from the major joint of the thumb and is preferred by many players and coaches. Secondly, your stance on the mat should be such that you can stand with your body facing along the aiming line repeatedly. This is necessary because if the mat is moved up or back on the rink you don’t have a fixed aiming line other than the one dictated by your angle to the centre line from your feet. If you wish to prove this place the mat, on the T and a jack on the other T. Draw a bowl to the anchor foot position on the mat, move the mat up to the 21m mark, place your foot in precisely the same place and deliver to the jack. You will find jack, make a strong mental note of your anchor foot place and deliver to the jack.

You will find that, without reference to any other mark, you will draw the shot. Thirdly, be completely balanced on the mat, if you are not as you start your backswing, stop, stand and restart your delivery swing. As you take the step forward, again if you don’t feel balanced, stop, stand, and start again. Fourthly, as you are swinging your arm into your backswing, make sure you lock your elbow and wrist at about the vertical and complete your back swing with a rigid arm and your delivery swing with the same rigidity of arm. Hold this position in the follow through, watch your bowl travel roughly a third of the way up the green before you come up going forward. Fifthly as you step forward make sure you are stepping straight ahead without bringing the toe of your stepping foot across your line as this will twist your body off your aiming line and produce a narrow backhand or a wide forehand delivery. Above all practice with an aim in mind, you may be having trouble with a particular shot, practice this shot repeatedly till you are comfortable playing it, but still practice the shots you play well. If you need help deciding on a training regime, talk to a coach who can help you develop the program which will suit your needs. I hope you have a very healthy and satisfying year in 2012 and above all enjoy your life and your bowls.

Have fun and enjoy.

Mens Championship Fours

Round 2

C. Hilton, Ian Law (sub), J. Heapy,G. Pearson (sk) 21

defeated

S. McGaveston, J. Flemming, J. Fowler, M. Pattison sk) 15

A very close game. Pearson’s team got 6 shots on End 5 to put them into the game, they also won 6 of last 8 Ends to finish off the game.

M. Dona, P. Hamilton, B. McKenzie, A .Stark (sk) 18

defeated

S. Coffey, G Skinner, B. Black,

W. Armstrong (sk) 16

Starks team deserved to win, they won the Ends 13 to 8 and that means they will be hard to beat – an Excellent Game.

K. Murphy, P. Eves, M. Myers, S. O’Toole (sk) 26

defeated

A. Panther, L. Jackson, David Cooke,B. Kelly (sk) 10

O’Toole’s team won the Ends 14 to 6 and got 7 multiple Ends so were always going to be hard to beat. A very good win.

Quarter Final

B. Archer, G. Blackburn, L. Landon, C. Vella (sk) 22

defeated

M. Foley, V. Sullivan, P. Street, G. Woods (sk) 21

A lot of tension in this game. Everyone knows the rules so you don’t need an Umpire, particularly when one member bowls two bowls in a row. Vella lost the Ends 10 to 11 but got 7 multiple Ends to 4 by Woods team. An amazing finish - Vella got 5 shots in End 20 and with a big drive by Wood’s his team replied with 5 shots but fell short by just 1 bowl. A very exciting game.

Semi Finals

K. Murphy, B. McGregor, M. Myers, S. O’Toole (sk) 20

defeated

B. Archer, G. Blackburn, L. Landon, C. Vella (sk) 13

This was a fantastic game. The score was 14 to 13 in favour of O’Toole’s team with one End to play. Would you believe it, O,Toole’s team got 6 shots so it was all over on the 20th End. What a good game.

C. Hilton, D. Lavis, J. Heapy, G. Pearson (sk) 22

defeated

P. Ormes, P. Hamilton, B. McKenzie, A. Stark (sk) 16

Another top game. 16 all with 3 Ends to play, and BINGO Pearson’s team won the last 3 Ends to win by 6 shots. A top performance.

Final

C. Hilton, D. Lavis, J. Heapy, G. Pearson (sk) 21

defeated

K. Murphy, B. McGregor, M. Myers, S. O’Toole (sk) 20

A great game. Pearson won the Ends 11 to 10 and they also won the multiple Ends 7 to 5. Pearson’s team had a good 13 to 5 head on End 11 which O’Toole’s team changed around by getting 13 shots in the next 5 Ends. Then O’Toole’s team had a handy 4 shot head with two Ends to play. Unfortunately he didn’t capitalize on the last End electing to draw instead of play an on shot with plenty of bowls to catch the Kitty at the rear.

Ladies Presidents Report

As this is the first Greens Gossip for the year, I would like to thank you for your support for my Presidential year.

Although it is a couple of months since we had our Christmas party, I’d like to congratulate Providor Margaret and her helpers (you know who you are), for the beautiful day they arranged and managed on Thursday 8th December. I am sure everyone enjoyed the day, so thank you for a job well done.

We celebrated the first of many events for the Club’s 75th Anniversary on Saturday 14th January. My goodness, how the face of bowls has changed over the years. Particularly in the Ladies Section, as was evidenced by the ‘Back to the Past’ attire worn…. No measuring sticks!, white stockings etc! and ‘horror of horrors’ lady bowlers in shorts!…………

The mind boggles in trying to imagine the changes that will no doubt occur in future years.

This anniversary is testimony to the astute management and the spirit of our members, both past and present.

I trust we will all participate in and enjoy the many activities that have been planned for the year.

Finally, I again wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year.

Keep smiling and good bowling.

Camels Corner

Sunday 23rd October

This was a day which the Camels were anxiously looking forward to. The Burleigh Sports Club Fishing Club had requested to join us in a pleasant Sunday morning’s competition. This was organized by several of our Camel’s members who are also members of the Fishos. So the morning eventuated with players from the Fishos joining the Camels members who were also members of the Fishos in what was a great morning’s bowls. With all Fishos combining to take on the Camels we ended up with 4 rinks of triples plus some who doubled up so we all had a game. At approx. 10.30 a table miraculously appeared adjacent to the small green together with 10kgs of juicy prawns that were provided by the Fishos. We later continued with bowls until12 midday when we adjourned inside.

The overall scores were the Fishos 37 and the Camels 54 thus the trophy presented by the Fishos was awarded to the Camels. The trophy is to be contested on an annual basis. Winning rinks with prizes of three $ 25 vouchers to the dining room of the Burleigh Sports Club were won by

Russell Newton, Rowdy and Stephan Mullawa,- Denny Edwards, Herbie and Wally, – Pete Harris, Strawb and Roy the Boy,- Losing rink prize went to Rabbit, Brent Issott and Jakob Wissman,-With the Camels prize going to Fishos of Dave and Brett Clarence with Mick Turner. Dave and Mick are also Camel members.

The Sports Club and the Fishos provided prizes that were donated for a big raffle with the proceeds divided between the Camels and the Fisho’s. The first prize in the raffle was won with Mick Boland scoring an 8 man tent. Mick’s first use of this tent on a camping weekend should be some sight. It was even suggested that we could save on accommodation costs at Evans Head by using it. Other prizes went to Harry Gaylard, Bob Graham, Wally from the Bombers, Dave Clarence, Eddie Ashford and a lady customer in the dining room.

Club Board Chairman John Fowler drew the winner of the club raffle of the personally signed football jersey won by Brian Raw a club bowler.

A great day was had by all with four new Club Members from the Fishos signing up as Club members and also indicating that they will be playing with the Camels. Thus one part of the benefits to the main club from the Camels is new members.

Sunday 30th October

The much awaited Annual Evans Head “Raw Prawns” visit to the Camels saw 30 Camels rock up against 19 visitors. The weather was extremely good to us with a pleasant morning being had by all. Games were all played in good humour with the Camels, having never beaten the Prawns winning five of the six rinks with Wally’s rink going down by one point. Camels eventual winners by 44 points. Winning rink for the Camels was Mick Turner, Cowboy McNamarra and the Pope. The prawns rink winners was the rink skipped by Bill Cooper. Prior to lunch being served the appropriate thanks were given and the raffle drawn with winners being Wally Kitching and Pat Carmody with a club visitor claiming 3rd prize. After lunch the “Raw Prawns” withdrew stumps and joined their bus home to daylight saving territory.

Sunday 6th November

The second Annual “ Monster” Jack Mawson Memorial Trophy Day was played in fine weather with 22 Camels turning up in memory of Jack. The trophy was won on the highest margin by Wayne Thompson and George Harrison The raffle was won by Harry Gaylard, Tom Boland with the three consolation prizes going to Boz, a club visitor and George Harrison. A debriefing was held with hot chips supplementing the refreshments.

Sunday 13th November

This day was specifically a fund raising day for the Burleigh Surf Club and their Miss Surfgirl entrant. 24 Camels managed to play various people as well as instructing new players. A great morning was had by all and a profitable one for the Surf Club

Sunday 20th November,

Due to the absence of myself in the “house sick”, Strawb down south and other key players away it was decided that just a friendly roll up take place and I am informed that this was the case.

Have a very merry Christmas and a great New Year, from the Camels.

Tips for Cruise Ships

Having recently completed a cruise here are some musts. Take along cold and flu tablets, motion sickness pills and any other medications you think you need. Shipboard Medical assistance is very expensive, ensure you have adequate travel insurance. Organised tours are expensive compared to researching your own on the internet. As soon as you have a booking number, access the cruise ship via the internet and discover all about it cash requirements etc. Ensure you get plenty of fresh air whilst on board for extended periods. Two thousand people enclosed in an air conditioned ship equals colds and flu. Be wary of what you eat it catches up on you. See as much of the entertainment as possible and above all ENJOY!!!!

Coaching Notes

This month I would like to revisit a subject which I thought I had covered some time ago, I refer to the etiquette of players on the green. Those simple things which you can, and should, do to make the game more enjoyable for your rink and adjoining rinks.

Know your opponents bowl and hand it to him/her if convenient.

Drop your mat on the green where you wish to bowl from.

Share the task of kicking bowls back 2m behind the mat.

Avoid distracting players while they are on the mat preparing to bowl.

Avoid encroaching on an adjoining rink.

Walk to the head as near as possible to the centre line of the rink.

Refrain from interfering with the head till the last bowl is delivered and the head has been declared.

Shake hands with your opponents and your team members before the start and at the end of the game.

Morning leads, take your mats and jack to the starting side of the afternoon game on your green and rink number. Afternoon leads, return your mats and jack to the mat box at the end of the game

Dress as per the dress code displayed in the locker room.

Club house etiquette – After the game the winners should offer to buy the first round of the refreshments and in singles the invitation should be extended to the marker. Losers should reciprocate and avoid making excuses for losing.

Please act with courtesy to everyone at all times. Learn the rules, rule books are available from the secretary at minimal cost. Always look and act like a bowler, even if you don’t think you are. Make sure you and everyone around you enjoys their game.

Good bowling and enjoy.

Cooke’s team were right on top form, won the Ends 16 to 5 so score was also big. They won 26 to 11.

P. Duncan & D. McKillop (sk) 20

defeated

M. Huxley & M. Pattison (sk) 13

A good game which McKillop’s team dominated. They won the Ends 12 to 8 and the multiple Ends 6 to 3 so they won comfortably.

B. Clark & G. Pearson (sk) 32

defeated

C. Lewis & T. Duncan (sk) 12

After 11 Ends it was only 12 to 16 in favor of the Pearson team but in next 6 Ends they won the lot to win easily by 20 shots. 32 to 12.

J. Rhode & G. Absalom (sk) 28

defeated

B. Crisp & K. Murphy (sk) 6

A one way battle, won the Ends 14 to 4 and the game by 22 shots.

A. Makepeace & L. Jackson (sk) 24

defeated

D. Jenkins & P. Eves (sk) 20

Quite an amazing result. Eves won the Ends 12 to 9 but Jackson’s team got three four shot Ends to win a cliffhanger by 4 shots. What a good game.

C. Maslen & D. McWhinney (sk) 33

defeated

S. Landon & M. Landon (sk) 12

This game was won over 5 Ends when McWhinney’s team scored 23 shots. What a great win.

K. Nicholls & F. Stapleton (sk) 28

defeated

J. Gabriel & C. Gabriel (sk) 13

The only difference in this game of lovely bowls was the 15 shots lost on 3 Ends by the Gabriel’s, otherwise it was evens steven’s.

H. Easton & G. Shillington (sk) 23

defeated

Dale McWhinney & J. McWhinney (sk) 13

A family affair where fun was enjoyed by a game of bowls. Shillington’s team won twice the number of Ends so won comfortably.

Quarter Finals

B. Clark & G. Pearson (sk) 32

defeated

Y. Haley & Dennis Cooke (sk) 4

Pearson’s team turned it on, only losing 3 Ends. Certainly a good combination. A good win.

J. Rhode & G. Absalom (sk) 23

defeated

K. Nicholls & F. Stapleton (sk) 14

Stapleton’s team led 9 to 4 after 6 Ends but could only manage to win 4 more Ends in next 14 Ends so lost quite easily by nine shots in a good game.

P. Duncan & D. McKillop (sk) 23

defeated

H. Easton & G. Shillington (sk) 16

From End 8 McKillop’s team had a hot patch of 9 Ends when they won 13 shots to get to a 10 shot lead of 19 to 9. They then lost 5 shots in one End but steadied the skip by getting 3 shots on the last End to win a hotly contested game by 7 shots. They won 23 to 16. Well done.

Semi Final

J. Rhode & G. Absalom (sk) 24

defeated

C. Maslen & D. McWhinney (sk) 14

A very interesting morning of bowls. McWhinneys team led 10 to 3 after 9 Ends but in next 12 Ends they would only win 3 or more Ends so Absalom’s team got 3 multiple Ends of 3 shots to win comfortably. They won by 10 shots – 24 to 14.

B. Clark & G. Pearson (sk) 25

defeated

P. Duncan & D. McKillop (sk) 17

A top game. After 7 Ends McKillop’s team led 10 to 5 but then in the next 14 Ends there was a huge turnaround. Pearson’s team won 10 of the 14 Ends played and that included 8 multiple Ends of 2 shots or more in the 14 Ends they played. They won comfortably by 8 shots and now meet Absalom’s team in the final.

Veteran Singles

Final
A. Stark 26

defeated

C. Vella 17

Vella did well to be only down by 2 shots after 20 Ends but Stark put his stamp on the game by winning the next 6 Ends to win an excellent game by nine shots. Well done Alf Stark.

Mens Fours
1st Round 2012 Competition

K. Murphy, P. Eves, M. Myers, S. O’Toole (sk) 30

defeated

K. Nicholls, J. McGovern, P. Casey, R. Haigh (sk) 11

We were outplayed in every facet of the game. O’Tooles men played very, very well and deserved their victory. Good luck in your next game.

1st Round 2012

A. Panther, L. Jackson, D. Cooke, B. Kelly (sk) 36

defeated

E. Ashford, R. Newton, T. Roe, D. Edward (sk) 8

Kelly’s team were a class act, won the Ends 12 to 7 but on 3 Ends they scored 16 shots. This made it very difficult for the opposition.

Mens Championship Fours

B. Archer, G. Blackburn, L. Landon, C. Vella(sk) 22

defeated

K. MacKenzie, G. Absalom, A. Waddell, D. McKillop (sk) 13

The Ends were fairly even, only 10 to 9 in favour of Vella’s team but the multiple Ends were 7 to 3 in favour of Vella and the cream was the first 2 Ends when they got 8 shots. A first class game.

S. Coffey, G. Skinner, B. Black, W. Armstrong (sk) 27

defeated

J. Fehlberg, G. Fehlberg, C. Fehlberg, T. Crompton (sk) 18

Armstrong’s team got a fast start, leading by 13 to 4 after 7 Ends. Crompton’s team in the next 13 Ends won 7 Ends to 6 Ends but the margin earlier was too much to catch up. Also a good Game.

S. McGaveston, P. Ormes, J. Fowler, M. Pattison (sk) 24

defeated

R. Fellenberg, J. Nicholas, W. Robins, T. Duncan (sk) 13

Very close after 18 Ends. Only 17 to 13 in favour of Pattison’s team, but when you lose 6 shots on End 19 the game is over rover. They lost 13 to 24.

Mixed Pairs
Final

B. Clark and G. Pearson (sk) 31

defeated

J. Rhode and G. Absalom (sk) 9

A very convincing victory. Pearson’s team won the Ends 12 to 4 and got 8 multiple Ends to win very comfortably 31 to 9. A good win.
